Trial and Pilots Initiative

Four subjects have already been redeveloped through the Trial & Pilots initiative – English, Science, Religious Studies and Visual Arts.

Through the Trial & Pilots initiative, the Ministry of Education was able to test the process used to redevelop new NCEA standards together with the education sector.

During Phase 1 of the Trial & Pilots initiative, a draft Learning Matrix, Assessment Matrix and Rationale document for NCEA Level 1 English, Science, Religious Studies and Visual Arts were developed.

Taking into account sector feedback on the Phase 1 products, draft Achievement Standards and supporting resources were developed in Phase 2. These were further refined, taking into account sector and public feedback.

Mini Pilots

These Achievement Standards will be piloted by a small number of schools in 2021. This mini-pilot will test the processes for piloting standards and supports ahead of a larger pilot in 2022.

This mini-pilot will include both internal and external assessments and students will be eligible for credits.
