Teacher guidance
This Internal Assessment Activity meets all of the requirements of the Achievement Standard. It may be used unchanged, or can be adapted by the teacher. If adaptations are made, teachers need to ensure that all achievement levels can be met in the activity and are reflected in the Assessment Schedule. Assessor judgements need to align with the Achievement Standard.

Teachers are required to verify that individual students have participated fully in the group’s development and rehearsal process. Keeping accurate attendance records, conferencing with individuals, and asking individuals to record and reflect on their development process are some of the ways teachers might confirm this.
Prior to this Assessment Activity, students should be encouraged to explore a variety of stimuli to create dance sequences as part of teaching and learning. Students should have the opportunity to create using a variety of groupings, so that different skills associated with composing for different sizes of groups are explored. It is also suggested that students work with a variety of peers so that they have a range of learning experiences to draw from.
Several opportunities to develop whanaungatanga should be provided within a year’s programme.
Teachers should guide students to select whakataukī that offer suitable concepts, ideas or themes as stimuli for dance composition. It is important that teachers approve the whakataukī that groups select. Teachers may choose to provide an appropriate selection of whakataukī to students. This selection could include whakataukī that are locally significant.
In preparation, teachers should have an understanding about the nature and purpose of whakataukī (and whakatauākī) in te ao Māori.
