In this Assessment Activity, you will learn, rehearse, and perform dance sequences from two contrasting dance styles or genres.

The first dance sequence will be a group hip-hop dance (or another dance genre or style approved by your teacher). This sequence will be taught to you by your teacher or a guest tutor.

The second dance sequence will be in a different genre or style. Your teacher will provide guidance about which dance genre or style will be most appropriate. This sequence will also be taught to you by your teacher or a guest tutor.

Both dance sequences must be at least 45 seconds in length. Your performance skills are the focus of this assessment.

For each dance sequence, follow Steps 1 to 3 below.

Step 1

Learn the dance sequence taught to you by your teacher or a guest tutor.

Identify the purpose of this dance sequence so you can perform it with appropriate performance energy. What is the mood, concept, or movement qualities you should express through the work?

Step 2

Rehearse and refine your sequence so that you can show control and fluency in the following ways:

  • accurate timing and size of movements
  • clear extensions of the spine, legs, and arms where required
  • accurate unison where required
  • accurate positioning in space relative to others
  • clear and well-defined arm shapes and body movements
  • appropriate use of performance energy.

You will present your work throughout the process to receive feedback from your teacher and peers on your performance skills. You may even record yourself during the process and watch it back to see how you can further refine your performance.

Step 3

Perform the dance sequence. You will perform as a member of a group but you will be assessed individually. Your performance will be assessed live but will be recorded for moderation purposes.

How to present your learning

You will perform two different dance sequences:

  • Each sequence must be at least 45 seconds of continuous movement.
  • Costuming is not required, although your clothing should allow you to fully express the dance movements in each performance.
  • Your performance for assessment may take place during class time, or at a time and place your teacher has arranged. If you are in the dance room, be sure to perform facing away from mirrors.
  • Your performance will be assessed live, but will be recorded to confirm assessor judgements.

Each of your sequences for assessment should have you moving continuously for at least 45 seconds but this may be taken from a longer dance work. You will need to identify the beginning and end of the sequence to be assessed if this is taken from a longer work.

A Statement of Intention is required for both sequences. These Statements are not assessed, but tell the assessor the purpose of each sequence. Your teacher may provide this Statement for you or help your group to create one. The Statement of Intention will be around 50 words in length and may be in written or oral form.

Timeframe

Several opportunities to learn and practise performance pieces will be provided within the year’s programme.

Each of these sequences should take approximately 3–4 weeks of learning and practise.

The assessment of the two dance sequences is likely to take place at two different time points throughout the year.

Getting started

To help you develop your performance skills, you will learn a variety of dance sequences throughout the year. It is important you participate fully in rehearsals and use the feedback you are given. This will help you to perform with confidence and accuracy.

Researching the features of the dance genres or styles that you will be performing for the assessment will also support your performance.
