The Night Mechanics by Mīria George was first performed on Tuesday August 29, 2017, at Bats theatre, Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand — produced by Tawata productions: Wellington.Scoop: ‘The Night Mechanics’ at Bats (2017).
The 2016 script is available through Playmarket: The Night Mechanics | Playmarket (2023).
It may be possible to get more information through Playmarket’s Playwrights in Schools programme: For Schools | Playmarket (2023).
The accompanying Teacher Guidance document (DR AA 1.1c Teacher Guidance) is an interview with Dawn Cheong that includes information about the rehearsal process and creating the first performance from an actor’s perspective.
Reviews:
- Scorched Earth: A Review of The Night Mechanics (Goodall, 2017).
- The Night Mechanics — Theatreview (Theatreview, 2022).
- Theatre review: The Night Mechanics tackles thorny issue of water rights | Stuff.co.nz (Coleman, 2017).
Understanding the importance of sources of water, for example awa, in mātauranga Māori is particularly relevant for this play:
- Kaupapa on the Couch: Rivers are people too! | The Spinoff (Hayden, 2017).
- The Report on the National Freshwater and Geothermal Resources Claim (Waitangi Tribunal, 2012).
Rather than students performing discrete scenes, the teacher could allocate roles for a full performance then submit 2-4 minutes of performance evidence, per student, for assessment.
