This Internal Assessment Activity meets all of the requirements of the Achievement Standard. It may be used unchanged, or can be adapted by the teacher. If adaptations are made, teachers need to ensure that all achievement levels can be met in the activity and are reflected in the Assessment Schedule. Assessor judgements need to align with the Achievement Standard.

Acknowledge the importance of whanaungatanga — what this means and how this strengthens rōpū.

Provide examples of professionally devised drama to help guide ākonga around what can be created. There are a variety of Aotearoa New Zealand examples.

Provide starting points for ākonga to engage with the stories and pūrākau, making sure that this process is conducted in a safe manner that protects their hauora. For example:

  • the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi
  • immigration into Aotearoa New Zealand (generations)
  • ANZAC and Gallipoli
  • the suffrage movement (for example, Kate Sheppard)
  • Matariki.

Links to resources (Matariki, waiata, pūrākau, and mōteatea)

Matariki: Living by the Stars (2023).

Book: Matariki: The Star of the Year by Dr. Rangi Matamua (2017).

These examples give a big picture where some whānau may have a personal connection, yet they also allow ākonga to connect in other ways if they do not have that personal connection.

Demonstrating whanaungatanga promotes ways of working collaboratively that are about relationship, kinship, and a sense of belonging. Restorative practices may prove helpful in discussions with any of the rōpū where disagreement occurs. “Restorative Practice is a relational approach to managing school life grounded in beliefs about equality, dignity, mana and the potential of all people.” PB4L Restorative Practice (The Ministry of Education, n.d.). There are resources that can prove helpful in teaching ākonga how to have positive, mana enhancing, restorative conversations so they can continue to share and negotiate ideas to create their devised drama.
