This Assessment Activity could be completed either individually or in a pair. Ākonga that work in pairs must be closely observed so kaiako can determine the skill development and contributions of each student as their project progresses. Kaiako must be able to identify how students have individually met all of the requirements of the standard — not just contributions.

Ākonga who submit their re-created track as a live presentation must be video recorded for moderation purposes.

This task is designed to be student-led, so that ākonga can re-create within a style they are already familiar with, but you will need to support them to choose a piece that is also suited to this Assessment Activity.

You should ensure that the original tracks ākonga are working to re-create are at an appropriate level for the requirements of the standard. Check that the elements within the music are clearly identifiable.

You could use some web-based resources to support student learning. The music exploration website Every Noise at Once, created by Glenn McDonald, is a helpful place to start looking for styles. There is also the option to categorise the scatterplot of data found on the main page of the website to genres by country, genres by city, and genres by year.

Remember to check for appropriateness before recommending websites to ākonga.
