Teacher guidance

This Internal Assessment Activity meets all of the requirements of the Achievement Standard. It may be used unchanged, or can be adapted by the teacher. If adaptations are made, teachers need to ensure that all achievement levels can be met in the activity and are reflected in the Assessment Schedule. Assessor judgements need to align with the Achievement Standard.

It would be helpful to exemplify several contexts that students could use for this Assessment Activity. Students could use texts that they have studied in class or will be studying later in the year. For example, teachers could facilitate a class discussion to brainstorm related contexts, and then students could select one from possible options.

There are different ways to approach the timing, teaching, and assessing of this Assessment Activity. Two of which are listed below:

  • this Assessment Activity may be carried out as a stand-alone activity with the teaching and learning being condensed into a mini-unit, or
  • the teaching and learning may be woven through the year’s programme over a much longer period of time, leaving the Assessment Activity itself until the latter half of the year.

Students should have engaged in a verbal language study before being assessed on their learning through this Achievement Standard. This study should enable them to discuss and independently explore the characteristics of verbal language from their chosen context.
