Teacher guidance

This Internal Assessment Activity meets all of the requirements of the Achievement Standard. It may be used unchanged, or can be adapted by the teacher. If adaptations are made, teachers need to ensure that all achievement levels can be met in the activity and are reflected in the Assessment Schedule. Assessor judgements need to align with the Achievement Standard.

Assessment

To ensure authenticity during this Assessment Activity, interactions between students must be unscripted and unrehearsed.

Rote-learned exchanges or scripted role plays will not meet the requirements of the Achievement Standard.

Teachers must:

  • not pair students that have practised the exact task together
  • give a short timeframe for students to finish recording, such as 15 minutes during class time.

Students must:

  • ensure individual submissions still meet the evidence requirements, if working in a group
  • be easily identifiable in any recordings.

Teachers must not:

  • give specific, individualised feedback to students related to language use in any interaction opportunities or contexts that will be submitted for assessment.

Students must not:

  • rehearse the exact interaction they will be recording for any submission
  • use any form of spoken or written communication during the interaction.

Teachers may:

  • provide students with prompts, such as images and card prompts, as long as they do not include examples of Korean.

Students are expected to use language appropriate to Level 6 of The New Zealand Curriculum. Using quality language is more important than the quantity of language used.

The recommended volume of evidence is approximately 2-3 minutes of Korean overall per student. Note that significant pauses will not count towards the overall time of student contribution.

Teachers will use their professional judgement when grouping students on the day of recording. Teachers need to ensure that students understand they must make sufficient contribution during any interactions. If applicable, they might consider the different abilities of the students.

Preparation for assessment

Interaction skills should be explicitly taught and practised as part of the teaching and learning programme. Students will benefit from multiple opportunities to interact in different contexts in Korean and receive formative feedback. This will enhance their quality of language and confidence in expressing themselves. Students may independently use resources such as class notes and dictionaries to help them prepare for the Assessment Activity.

Students should fully understand the nature of the assessment and what the expectations are.

Ways to assist students in preparing for assessment may include:

  • individual preparation, such as brainstorming possible questions and responses
  • opportunities to practise with stimulus materials similar to the assessment, for example, images and card prompts, as long as they do not include examples of Korean
  • activities where students practise in quick interactions with different partners.
