Teacher guidance
This Internal Assessment Activity meets all of the requirements of the Achievement Standard. It may be used unchanged, or can be adapted by the teacher. If adaptations are made, teachers need to ensure that all achievement levels can be met in the activity and are reflected in the Assessment Schedule. Assessor judgements need to align with the Achievement Standard.

Ākonga may work individually or in small groups to plan their investigation and collect their evidence. This means that ākonga may have a shared title for their Assessment Activity, and may share their investigation process and evidence. The method of evidence collection is not assessed, however, ākonga must carry out an investigation and use the evidence to support their response.
Evidence collection can be done in the classroom or in a suitable space that would allow the measurement of forces involved when an object floats or moves on a body of water. As there will be moving materials, and water access and use, health and safety precautions will need to be established prior to measuring.
The individual portion of the Assessment Activity will consist of:
- processing and presenting evidence
- showing understanding of physics concepts and relationships involved when an object floats on or moves across water, using evidence to support their response.
Group discussions are allowed during the investigation, however, in the final output ākonga must work independently to submit original and personal work.
Ākonga should have the opportunity to choose between doing part of the Assessment Activity in a group or doing the whole investigation individually.
During the investigation process, kaiako will use checkpoints to provide feedback. If ākonga encounter hurdles or challenges in doing the Assessment Activity, kaiako may provide advice or offer suggestions. Kaiako must not be directly involved with any part of the investigation other than providing advice. If necessary, kaiako may lead ākonga with a template to guide the process of investigation.
