Definition

Religion can be understood in terms of seven characteristics that are complementary and intertwined (experience, narratives, ritual, beliefs, moral and ethical teachings, social organisation, and material expression). Scholars of religious studies often distinguish between two different definitions of religion: descriptive and functional. The descriptive definition of religion serves to define religion, while the functional definition explores the function a religion has in a community or society.
