Update on Teacher-Only Days

Additional teacher-only days with dedicated focus on implementing changes in curriculum and achievement standards.

  • TMoA
  • Teacher Only Days

The Ministry confirms four additional Teacher-Only Days are available for primary and secondary schools – two in 2023 and two in 2024. The additional days are to support implementation across The New Zealand Curriculum refresh, re-design of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa and the shifts to strengthen NCEA.

The Ministry strongly encourages schools and kura to co-ordinate the timing of Teacher-Only Days on a single day across regions and locations. The date can be selected that best suits activity planning across a defined two-week time-period.

Multiple schools engaging together on change programme implementation provides opportunities for peer-led support and learning. National implementation teams will work closely with Te Mahau takiwā (regional offices) to provide support for schools and kura. This includes support from subject expert roles across Learning Area Leads (NCEA), Curriculum Leads, NCEA Implementation Facilitators as well as people providing services for Literacy and Numeracy Support in Schools.

A single date also provides parents, caregivers, and whānau with ākonga in more than one school with a more joined-up approach.

When are they happening?

The first TOD in 2023 can be held during the first two weeks of Term Two – between Monday 24 April and Friday 5 May 2023.

Timing and focus of the second day in 2023 and days in 2024 will be confirmed with sector representatives.

What will they focus on?

Direct input from sector representatives is crucial to support delivery of Teacher-Only Days. NCEA Change established a strong foundation for collaborating on the advice on the timing and content for individual TODs through the Accord Sub-Group employed for Accord Teacher-Only Days.

We will engage with a similar sector advisory group, with a different composition, to manage delivery of Teacher-Only Days in 2023 and 2024. The Ministry will establish this group as soon as practical. Timing and content of the second Teacher-Only Day in 2023 and in 2024 will be confirmed with the sector advisory group.
