Public engagement on the NCEA subject proposal for The New Zealand Curriculum Levels 2 & 3, and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa Levels 1, 2 & 3 closed on 13 August 2021.
The Ministry considered feedback from 2024 online survey responses, 20 written submissions, and 15 special interest groups during face-to-face engagements.
The Minister of Education has announced the NCEA subjects for The New Zealand Curriculum levels 2 & 3, and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa Level 1, 2 & 3 subjects.
The NCEA Subject List has 67 subjects: 56 from The New Zealand Curriculum, and 11 from Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.
These subject changes will increase specialisation, support parity for mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge), and provide clearer pathways to further education, training, or work. The changes are part of a wider move to make senior secondary qualifications more robust, consistent, inclusive, and accessible for students of all abilities and backgrounds.
