Unpacking the Standard
Mātauranga Māori constitutes concepts and principles that are richly detailed, complex, and fundamental to Māoridom. It is important to remember that the practice of these are wider and more varied than their use within the proposed NCEA Achievement Standards and supporting documentation.
We also recognise that the cultures, languages, and identities of the Pacific Islands are diverse, varied, and unique. Therefore the Pacific concepts, contexts, and principles that have been incorporated within NCEA Achievement Standards may have wide-ranging understandings and applications across and within the diversity of Pacific communities. It is not our intention to define what these concepts mean but rather offer some ways that they could be understood and applied within different subjects that kaiako and students alike can explore.

The intent of the Standard
This Achievement Standard assesses the ability of ākonga to engage with perspectives on a historical context. Taking a historical perspective requires ākonga to understand the social, cultural, intellectual, and emotional settings that have shaped people’s lives and actions in the past. This might include consideration of historical actions, responses, motivations, experiences, beliefs and values, and concepts. The intent of this Achievement Standard is for ākonga to demonstrate understanding of historical perspectives when they examine events, people, and places of history, and the critical thinking involved in their pursuit of this understanding.
Making reliable judgements
The Achievement Standard asks ākonga to think critically and to consider actions, responses, motivations, experiences, and beliefs and values of individuals and groups of people in historical contexts. For example, ākonga could explore the influence of whanaungatanga, tūrangawaewae, whakapapa, religious beliefs, vā, and worldviews on a historical individual's or group's perspectives. Where appropriate, it may also be useful to examine the influence and exercise of power.
For the purposes of this Achievement Standard, ākonga will be required to engage with at least two perspectives on a singular historical context. A historical context could be an event, person, or place. Perspectives could be opposing or similar, as long as they are distinct. This gives ākonga the opportunity to explore the diverse factors that may shape a group or individual's perspective on a historical context, and how this perspective may in turn shape the historical narrative that a group or individual recounts. In all cases, ākonga will demonstrate their understanding of perspectives through the use of appropriate supporting evidence.
Collecting evidence
Refer to the External Assessment Specifications for further information.
Possible contexts
All historical contexts come with perspectives and it is expected that kaiako emphasise these in the teaching and learning of their History courses. Ākonga will study a variety of historical contexts throughout the year and will explore perspectives within these contexts.
