Information regarding new vocabulary lists and spoken text resources for Learning Languages.

New Zealand Sign Language Level 1 Vocabulary List

A new NCEA Level 1 Vocabulary List for New Zealand Sign Language was published on the NCEA website in March 2026. This resource will be for use in external assessments in 2026.

The new Level 2 and 3 lists for New Zealand Sign Language are expected to be published later this year, for use in 2027.


Te Reo Māori Level 1 Vocabulary List

A new NCEA Level 1 Vocabulary List for Te Reo Māori was published on the NCEA website in January, for use in 2026. The new Level 2 list for Te Reo Māori is expected to be published later this year, for use in 2027.

 

The Vocabulary Lists are valuable resources designed to help teachers, kaiako, and students understand the language expectations for each level. They support teachers and kaiako to understand the language that is appropriate at different curriculum levels for language learners, and what students are required to recognise for external assessments.

The languages Vocabulary Lists and information about them can be found on the Teaching pages for the subject on NCEA.education.

Teachers must ensure the revised Vocabulary Lists are used for assessment in 2026.

 

Vagahau Niue Level 1 Spoken Texts

A collection of Vagahau Niue Spoken text resources was published on the Tāhūrangi website in January 2026. The collection features audio passages in Vagahau Niue on 10 different topics and includes a written transcript and English translation for each. The texts can be used for listening comprehension related activities in a language teaching and learning programme.
