An exhaustive list of categories and separate definitions for the categories of kaupapa whānui, whakanui, aroha, and whakapapa can be found in the Subject Glossary for Te Ao Haka https://ncea.education.govt.nz/arts/te-ao-haka?view=subject-glossary.

Explanatory Note 5

Ihi, wehi, and wana

  • Ihi refers to the projection of a performer’s personal magnetism and passion which elicits in the beholder a response of awe or respect
  • Wehi refers to the awe in which charismatic performers or performances are held
  • Wana refers to the excitement generated by a performer or performance

Together, they form the expectation for expressing a performance with artistic and technical proficiency. Having ihi, wehi, and wana allows the performer to embody and express a performance to others.

Explanatory Note 6

Storytelling artistry refers to the ability to elevate a performance beyond the execution of movement, taking the audience on a journey and allowing them to experience the narrative emotively.

Technical proficiency refers to the technical knowledge and skills required to execute Te Ao Haka performances accurately and with precision. This includes a particular focus on executing key features and elements.
