Every school leader, kaiako, and whānau member has a role in the development of literacy and numeracy. By considering how everyone can work in a connected and coherent way, literacy and numeracy learning can thrive within and beyond educational settings.

Key Pedagogical Shifts
There are four key pedagogical shifts that kaiako can consider to support their literacy and numeracy teaching and learning.
Every kaiako is a teacher of literacy and numeracy
Every kaiako needs to be a teacher of literacy and numeracy in their subject; every kaiako needs to know what they can do to support ākonga to develop their literacy and numeracy skills.
There are Effective Practices that Support Literacy and Effective Practices that Support Numeracy that kaiako can incorporate into their teaching and learning to support numeracy and literacy in their classroom. All learning areas provide opportunities to incorporate strategies and approaches that will strengthen literacy and numeracy skill development.
There is a strong connection between a student’s vocabulary and his or her reading ability. Embedding ways to strengthen vocabulary plays a role in every subject. The Dyslexia Guide signposts inclusive practice that all kaiako could incorporate into their practice.
Even small shifts in practice can make a big difference
The Literacy Pedagogy Guides (LPGs) and the Numeracy Pedagogy Guides (NPGs) showcase a selection of literacy-rich and numeracy-rich contexts in different learning areas and the small, effective steps that kaiako can trial and weave into their teaching practice.
They are designed to link authentic and meaningful contexts that are literacy-rich and numeracy-rich from your learning area to the content ideas in Unpacking Literacy and Unpacking Numeracy.
These guides will show kaiako how to begin to identify and incorporate literacy and numeracy teaching and learning opportunities within their existing teaching.
Good practice for embedding literacy and numeracy can be planned or spontaneous
Kaiako can plan to integrate specific literacy or numeracy skills or strategies into their planned programme. Numeracy Enhanced Plans look at a sequence of activities that are part of a teaching and learning programme. They highlight the numeracy opportunities within the activities and provides ways in which you can make numeracy explicit for ākonga.
Kaiako can reflect on their current practice and plan to further develop their literacy and numeracy teaching practice using the Kaiako Literacy Action Plan and the Kaiako Numeracy Action Plan, found at the bottom of the teaching tab of Literacy and Numeracy.
Kaiako can also seize opportunities (teachable moments) to highlight literacy and numeracy skills strategies or tools as they come up. By noticing, recognising, and responding kaiako can purposefully use classroom observations and conversations to spontaneously embed literacy and numeracy skills.
Every teacher needs to understand what NCEA Literacy and Numeracy might look like in their subject
Literacy and numeracy are embedded in all learning areas. Unpacking the individual documents and resources available will help kaiako to develop an understanding of what NCEA Literacy and Numeracy might look like in their subject. Drawing key messages and ideas from the available resources and making connections across them will help Kaiako to further develop and strengthen their understanding of NCEA Literacy and Numeracy.

The Common Practice Model
This year, the Ministry of Education will also be releasing a new Common Practice Model in phases. The Common Practice model will map out pedagogical approaches and practices that empower kaiako to make informed decisions about the progress and needs of ākonga. You can find more information about the Common Practice Model on the Ministry of Education website.
